Using Citations to Boost your Local SEO

Why Citations are important

Citations are considered a ranking factor for local SEO. Having your business listed in trusted online directories sends signals to Google to improves their degree of certainty that your business exists.

The quantity of listings, the accuracy of your listings, and the quality of the online directories can affect how Google perceives your online presence.

1. Make Sure You N.A.P. Consistently

A N.A.P. Citation Signal stands for your business name, address and phone number. Google needs to see your business key details across your Google Business Profile, website and some other directories.

It is important to make sure that these details are the exact same across all platforms. We suggest writing them down and copying to ensure it is always correct.

 2. Think Local First

When ranking for local search, you need citations in ‘local’ directories and websites. Some options can link to include your local chamber of commerce, your local business association, even your local school (if you sponsor them), your local newspaper and your local radio station.

All of these citations have local relevance. So if you are trying to rank higher inWollongong, make sure you have local links in the Illawarra area. If you are trying to rank higher in Nowra, make sure you have local links in the Shoalhaven area etc etc.

3. Think National Next

Once you have the local citations sorted out, it is time to make sure you are listed on all the major national directory and Map websites that can help you rank higher. These include websites like Yellow Pages, Yelp, and Google Maps and Apple Maps (there are around 100 options generally depending on your location and business).

Google views these  as another signal that can be trusted especially if they are paid directories like Yellow Pages, as the search engine can see that you are paying to be listed, therefore, you are most likely to be trusted.

4. Finally Your Industry and Profession

Many industries like travel, restaurants, accommodation and construction have specific directories and even review sections that allows your business to be listed. For example, TripAdvisor for travel and accommodation, Zomato for restaurants and Houzz for design and architecture.
